Sunday classes for adults

  • Women's Bible Study (Sundays at 9:00 am)

    This group uses NT Wright’s “For Everyone” commentary as a guide and is currently focused on the Gospels. The class meets in the Parish Hall Vestry room. Email Kathi Hilton for more information.

    Jay Patterson leads the study on Sundays in the Parish Hall Classroom and on Zoom. The study is based on Gene Getz’s Life Essentials Study Bible and includes videos that illustrate each lesson. For the zoom link, email Jay.

    Bill Ross leads a study about family systems, meeting in the Parish Hall classroom. All ages are welcome to this class that develops relationship skills by exploring your family roots and beyond.     The Great Divorce (Sundays at 10:00 am)

    Imagine yourself at a dingy bus stop, waiting for a ride to heaven. This is where our journey begins. Fr. Harris and Fr. Houk lead this chapter-by-chapter class on C.S. Lewis's "The Great Divorce," with videos and discussion prompts to guide us. We’ll meet intriguing characters and uncover plenty of spiritual insights, deepening our faith along the way. Whether you’re a Lewis fan or just curious, this is a journey you won’t want to miss. Get on the bus at the Parish Hall.

    The Membership Class (Next Class on September 15, 10:00 am)

    Whether you are new to the parish or have attended for some time, this 45 minute class is the place to learn more about the Episcopal Church and all St. John’s has to offer. Fr. Houk will also explain what it means to be a member of the church and how to become a member, whether you want to transfer your membership from another Episcopal parish or join St. John’s from another denomination.   • The Confirmation Class (Next Class TBD)

    Fr. Houk offers this class, usually in the spring, for adults preparing to be confirmed and for anyone interest in a thoughtful exploration of Christian belief and practice as it is lived out in the Episcopal Church. The class covers liturgy, Christology, the Trinity, Ecclessiology, prayer, and vocation. Email Fr. Houk if you are interested in the next class.

    100 Days of Dante (Thursdays at 12:00 pm)

    Whether you’re a literature lover, a spiritual seeker, or simply interested in an epic adventure, you’re invited on this odyssey of the soul. Embark on "100 Days of Dante," where we’ll journey through the depths of hell and rise to the heights of heaven, all while discovering deeper truths about the Christian faith. The class meets every Thursdays at noon (starting September 12), both in the Parish Hall and on on Zoom. Intrigued? Contact Fr.     Coffee with the Curate (Every Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm)

    Fr. Harris offers "Coffee with the Curate" every Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at East Dallas Middle Ground (718 North Buckner Boulevard). He's ready and caffeinated for conversations about life, the universe, and everything—no pressure, just a friendly chat over a cup of coffee. See you there!

    Pub Theologians (Second Thursdays at 7:00 pm)

    This men’s discussion group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm at Lovers Pizza and Pasta, 10302 Garland Road. The current top is prayer, exploring the it both theologically and practically. Come, enjoy your favorite drink or soft drink.

    Mission: Recovery (Currently on hold; regrouping soon)

    This twice a month meeting is a place for frank, honest, and confidential conversation for anyone who is struggling with addiction or knows someone who is hurting because of their relationship with alcohol or drugs. It is a context where people can share, pray, and talk openly about the Christian dimensions of recovery and how Jesus heals in community. Tim Green coordinates this group.
